Careers in Machining
Reading a blueprint, preparing tools, setting up a machine, starting the machining process, and then inspecting the finished part: machining professions combine preparation, equipment expertise, and precision inspection.
These roles are carried out at several DEMGY Group plants. The specific activities vary from one site to another, as do the equipment and hiring needs. DEMGY Group has 10 industrial sites located in France, Germany, Romania, and the United States.
What machining roles are available at DEMGY Group?
CNC Turner
The CNC turner produces parts based on a manufacturing specification and a machining plan. They read the drawing, set up the machine, and select the appropriate cutting tools before starting production.
Their job involves more than just operating the machine. They monitor the part’s production, inspect the result, and intervene when a defect occurs. They must then analyze the deviation, make any corrections within their scope of responsibility, and report any persistent issues.
Programming and setup are among the skills required for certain positions. For example, a job posting for a CNC lathe operator published by the DEMGY Normandie plant requires the ability to read and correct an ISO program on a FANUC controller. The equipment and skills expected vary depending on the specific position offered by each plant.
Milling Machine Operator
The milling machine operator prepares and performs milling operations based on drawings, 3D models, and manufacturing specifications.
They program and set up the equipment, select the appropriate tooling and parameters, and then start and monitor the manufacturing process. Re-machining, finishing, and adjustment operations may also be part of their job.
Once the part is completed, an inspection verifies the dimensions, geometry, surface finish, and compliance with expected tolerances. The milling operator must also identify any manufacturing deviations or quality risks and ensure the traceability of their operations.
Wire and Die-Sinking EDM Technician
The EDM technician also uses a drawing, a 3D model, or a manufacturing specification to prepare for the job.
The work involves programming wire and die-sinking EDM machines, preparing electrodes, selecting parameters, and setting up and monitoring the manufacturing process. Re-machining, finishing, or adjustment operations may be required to complete the job.
The part is then inspected using appropriate measuring equipment to verify its geometry, dimensions, surface finish, and compliance with tolerances.
What do machining trades involve?
Job titles may vary, but many work situations are common across different positions.
First, understand what needs to be done. Blueprints, 3D models, work instructions, and manufacturing files provide the necessary information to prepare for the operation.
Next comes machine setup: selecting tools, making adjustments, and, when required by the task, preparing or correcting the program.
During machining, the professional monitors the manufacturing process and responds when an anomaly occurs. A dimensional deviation or defect must be identified before making the appropriate correction.
Finally, the part is inspected. Measuring, verifying geometry, examining surface finish, and checking tolerances are all integral parts of the job. Some positions also include finishing, fitting, or pre-assembly operations.
In which plants are machining activities carried out?
Machining operations are carried out at several DEMGY Group plants: DEMGY Normandie in Saint-Aubin-sur-Gaillon, DEMGY Paris in Clamart, and DEMGY Atlantique in Gétigné, France; DEMGY Făgăraș and DEMGY Deva in Romania; DEMGY Chicago in Illinois and DEMGY Pacific in Tacoma, Washington, in the United States.
Activities vary from one location to another. They include, in particular, the machining of engineering polymers and high-temperature polymers, micro-machining, the machining and Polishing of transparent and optical parts, the machining of composites, and, at certain locations, the machining of metals.
What skills are required?
Reading and interpreting a drawing is a key skill. You must then be able to translate this information into concrete actions: setting up equipment, selecting tools, adjusting settings, starting the process, and monitoring it.
Precision is essential at every stage. You must know how to measure a part, interpret the results, and identify any deviations from manufacturing requirements.
Proficiency in programming depends on the role and the equipment used. Similarly, the level of training and experience required varies for a CNC lathe operator, a milling machine operator, or a technician working in electrical discharge machining (EDM).
Therefore, the job postings published by each plant specify the skills, experience, and prerequisites associated with the position to be filled.
